Homemade Baked Beans

I love baked beans, but the canned ones are not the healthiest as they’re usually full of sugar. So I decided to make my own. They’re a good source of protein, iron, B & C vitamins, fibre, & potassium.Baked Beans 2There’s a bit of preparation involved but they are still very easy to make! These are loosely based on a Hairy Bikers recipe, with a few tweaks here & there. Delicious with avocado toast for breakfast, or as a snack anytime.


200g dried Canellini Beans or 1 can cooked beans

1 can chopped tomatoes

150ml vegetable stock

1 small red onion

1 clove garlic

1 tablespoon olive or other vegetable oil

1 tablespoon liquid aminos

1 heaped teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon date syrup



Soak the beans overnight if you’re using dried. Rinse & drain, and cook in boiling water for ten minutes. Reduce the heat to a simmer & cook for a further 45 minutes.

Meanwhile chop the onion & garlic very finely, and saute in oil for 10 minutes until they start to caramelise. Add the stock and simmer for another 5 minutes. Add the tinned tomatoes, paprika, liquid aminos & date syrup and simmer for half an hour.

Add the cooked beans to the reduced sauce & simmer for another 15 minutes.

Serve with sourdough toast & avocado!
